New India Insurance raises mediclaim premium by up to 20%
MUMBAI: New India Insurance, the country’s leading health insurer, has decided to raise premium on its mediclaim policy by up to 20%, but almost doubled the maximum sum assured to Rs 15 lakh to attract new customers.
The hike in premium is expected to lead to better underwriting experience. This revision has happened for the first time since the product was launched in 2012.
“We have revised feature and price of our product Mediclaim 2012,” a senior New India executive said. “Our health insurance claim ratio was exceeding 100%.With all this we expect definite correction,” the executive said.
According to the new rates, approximately a 35-year old can buy mediclaim policy of Rs 8 lakh sum assured for Rs 10,032 in metro areas, compared to Rs 8,690 earlier.
New India has about 19% market share in health insurance, as of the end of 2015-16.
Mediclaim 2012 is one of its two most popular products, along with family floater.
The retail segment accounts for 40% of the health insurance premium, while corporate segment accounts for the rest.
Any increase in rates is applicable only after approval from the regulator. A company can revise rates after three years of launching a product. Insurers say that medical inflation goes up by 15% to 20% every year.
Apart from revising rates, New India has added several riders to the policy such as maternity after three years of waiting period. It has also increased the maximum sum assured to Rs 15 lakh from Rs 8 lakh. Premium on group mediclaim has gone up by 10-15%. Group mediclaim has higher claim ratio than retail policies, industry officials said.
“Generally, claim experience on retail portfolio is better than group insurance,” said Shreeraj Deshpande, health insurance head at Future Generali Insurance.
The regulation requires companies to give three months’ notice to existing customers before revising rates.
Health insurance is one of the fastest growing segments in the general insurance industry, growing 20-22% in the last few years.
New India’s mediclaim policy New India’s mediclaim policy is available to people between 18 years and 65 years. Those beyond 65 years can continue their insurance provided they are insured under the policy without any break.
